A Foggy Day in Phoenix

We've had some real desert-style winter in Phoenix recently. Our temperatures dropped into the low 20s on New Year's Eve and we even had some actual snowflakes in parts of town. We've had some bushes and trees freeze to the point that they've turned completely brown and will, hopefully, live on after it warms up and they've been trimmed back. A lot of people cover their landscaping with sheets and towels in an effort to hold in some of the heat and protect from the freeze. I know to all you folks who shovel your way out every morning this sounds like a walk in the park, but it is definitely unusual for this part of the country.

On the morning of Friday, December 17th, we woke up to some strange looking fog and these pictures are so surreal considering we're usually bathed in sunshine, I just had to share them with you. These are color photos - I did not manipulate them at all - and the first three shots were taken in the back yard at 8:28 a.m. ...

I walked out the front door one minute later and it was brightening up just a little as you look down the street, although you can't see a thing at the end of the block and there are houses there ...

Then in the back yard one more time at 8:30 a.m. where the fog was lifting and we could start to see some actual color ...

So that's what a foggy day in Phoenix looks like over a two to three minute period.

I can't believe how quickly it changed. It started out super spooky looking.

That is wild! I'm talking really wild! Those first two pictures are eerie and beautiful, all at the same time.

Here in Florida, we've had such fluctuations in the temperature. Last month, we dipped down into freezing, so of course we had to cover everything. I live on 12 acres and it took us 48 sheets and blankets to cover all the crucial things. When the freeze lifted, I washed and dried and put all those covers away. Of course, last week it happened again. Grrrrr. I'm not washing them until I know for sure the freeze is gone for good.

You are right, it sure did look creepy! I'm so glad it brightened up, but those first few pictures are spectacular (in both bad and good perspectives). I'm sure it gave you the heebie-jeebies at first. :)

Awesome photos. I hate foggy days, and we had a ton here in Salt Lake. I need me some blue sky. Thank goodness we had some yesterday

The rapid weather variations make me think of Utah. I love the first 3 pictures though. They turned out so beautiful!! If I could, I would print them and hang them. Lovely!! I am sad for your plants though...they should be okay after a good, happy trimming. :)

I'm probably in the minority here, but if you can have a favorite weather condition, mine is fog. Loved it ever since I was a child. I think it's because I was shy and felt a little more "hidden" from the world. Now I love it for the eerieness. Great pics!

That truly must have been an eerie site, but you sure captured some gorgeous photos of the anomoly! Love that one with the sun trying to peek through!

Wow, those are some cold temps for your neck of the woods. I bet the "snowbirds" were freaking out!

That a thick fog. Weather is so weird this year. When we were watching the New Year's Eve show from Vegas it was 28 there and NY was in the 40's. That's just not right!
